Gun Safety / Reform
For decades, we’ve watched a scripted dance in Washington. Democrats call for gun safety, and Republicans block it by claiming any vetting is a "slippery slope" to confiscation. The result? Total gridlock while American lives are lost. I am here to break that script by backing the Republican leadership into a corner they cannot escape. I am proposing a bill called the "No Guns for Illegal Aliens Act."
To my friends on the Left: I’ll be the first to tell you that I don't like that terminology. I prefer to use the term "undocumented immigrants" because I believe in the dignity of every person. But I am an Independent who is more interested in saving lives than in linguistic purity. I am willing to put those words on paper and use the Right’s own favorite "boogeyman" to force them to the table.
Republicans spend every day talking about the dangers of an unsecured border and "illegal aliens" in our communities. Fine. If that is your biggest fear, then explain to the American people why you support a system that allows those very individuals to walk into a gun show or a private sale and buy a firearm with zero vetting. By calling this the "No Guns for Illegal Aliens Act," we force every Republican in Congress into a choice they’ve avoided for thirty years: They can co-sponsor this bill and finally grant us the Universal Background Checks we need to keep our communities safe. Or, they can admit to their voters that they care more about the gun lobby than they do about "illegal aliens" arming themselves in our neighborhoods.
The Real-World Result: While the branding is designed to jam the Republican gears, the substance of this bill is what actually matters. By requiring a background check for every single firearm transfer in this country, we achieve what has been impossible for too long: National Security: We ensure that those not in this country legally cannot obtain weapons. Public Safety: We close the "shadow market" loopholes that allow violent criminals and those with documented mental illnesses to bypass the law. I am not a career politician who is content with "thoughts and prayers." I am a pragmatist. I am willing to say the things the Democratic party won't say, and use the words the Republican party loves to use, if it means we finally stop the flow of unvetted weapons into the hands of dangerous people. This is about out-thinking the machine to keep Americans safe. This is a common sense gun law.
