Structural reform

I want to talk about structural reform, the backbone of this campaign. As you may know by now, the four pillars of our movement are:

1. End "Lifetime Appointments" by adding term limits to all elected officials.

2. End Gerrymandering so the people select their candidates again, rather than the other way around.

3. Ban Stock Trading for Congress, because nobody should be profiting off the laws they write and the information they get exclusively.

4. Remove Big and Dark Money from our elections for good.

For far too long now, politics hasn't been about having the best or most creative solutions for constituents. Instead, it’s been about fear-mongering and speaking negatively about the other side of the aisle. The viewpoint of most politicians today seems to be: "If I can just make them hate my opponent enough, I can win this election, even if they don’t fully agree with what I say or believe." Politicians on both sides continuously say we live in the greatest country on Earth. But should the greatest country on Earth pigeonhole its voters into choosing between the "lesser of two evils"? We shouldn’t have to make our most important national decisions based on who we like less or how afraid we are of the other side. It should be about voting for the person we believe will find solutions that last, solutions that better our generation and the generations to come.

As you've probably gathered, I look at politics very pragmatically. I believe with the current administration in power for at least another two years, there is no real chance that left-wing progressive ideas get passed. So, the only pragmatic way forward for the next two years is to focus on these core pillars of structural reform. This is the perfect time to elect someone relentless in trying to get these reforms passed. There is enough bipartisan support to do this, yet my opponent remains focused on raising as much money as possible from billionaires and PACs while staying in the news by speaking negatively about the Trump regime. I see people in local groups claiming one party or the other will hold power for the next 20 years. There is no logic to that and unless something drastic changes I believe our track record is our future. Rinse and repeat the status quo unless we start electing independent candidates. If we keep electing establishment politicians we will simply continue to bounce back and forth between parties in power, spending precious time and resources undoing what the previous administration did. That is not the way we make real progress in this country.

Democrats and Republicans alike take billions from special interest groups and billionaires. This is a huge problem that, until fixed, will prevent us from seeing real representation. Make no mistake, this is simply a choice. The Democrats could have taken the moral high ground and banned this type of fundraising decades ago. They chose not to. My opponent is one of the biggest recipients of that high-dollar money, and you can tell exactly where her allegiance lies because of it.

Call to Action: The 20-Minute Independent The time for change is now. When we run a campaign like this, leading by example to get the money out of our elections, it’s going to take an army. It’s going to take everyone talking to their friends, family, and coworkers. I’m not asking for a big time commitment from any single one of you, I’m asking for a super small time commitment from every one of you. 20 minutes to Independence. Become a "20-minute Independent" by electing true independent representation. Thank you so much.
